Strengthening Human Rights in T&T
UWI Repost: Ms. Debbie Jacob, Trinidad Express Individual of the Year 2019 and award winning journalist, has said that one of the top requests she has heard throughout her experiences volunteering as a teacher in Remand Yard, is for more skill-based training. She recounted tales of working with highly intelligent and skilled individuals who were held for years in Remand, only to be found innocent in the end. She said said these people feel they have no voice.
Ms Jacob made a very striking comment about the prospects for sentenced individuals wanting to appeal a ruling. She recounted how many are told that if they go that route, they may have to wait even longer than they would have had to had to by instead choosing to serve the sentence.
